Photography has always played a social and informative role. In the years of the digital image its role has not diminished, however the continuous flow of imagery has conveyed much of its enjoyment to entertainment. Relegated to few, the pleasure of the materiality of the printed image has deprived many of the meditative and symbolic value of the individual image, the photographic object.

V, During the look down the Italian Red Cross worked in contact with the last ones, homeless, looking for them in the holes and in the barracks at night. They had no chance of surviving mainly due to the lack of food, due to the closure of all the restaurant businesses. Fear of the virus kept them hidden, including early uneven symptoms and cold at night. I remember that the name of this volunteer, one of the oldest in the ambulance, began with the letter V. The events were very fast in front of me.

Rabbit Island is a 91-acre forested island in Lake Superior three miles east of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula (USA). The majority of the island is held under a conservation easement granted by the Keweenaw Land Trust, assuring its unique ecosystem and will serve as a platform for science, art, preservation, and recreation for the generations. Rabbit Island is an Art Residency for artists where I spent one month in June 2018 considering the island my sketchbook, drawing with lights, colors, waves, stone marks, clouds, fog, and everything I could not control. Photos of my research I don’t draw related to several land art and fictional actions are available exclusively on OEG to support my work with Rabbit Island and other charity projects. The residency reflects on the American continent’s four hundred year history of settlement and division of land. It stems from the idea that in a developed society, the intelligent organization of wild spaces is one of the most civilized things we can pursue. The island itself, an unsettled and undivided area, enables artists to present commentary on these ideas, creating interpretations and solutions to issues of the global importance of climate change, loss of natural habitat, the value of pristine watersheds, the environmental implications of entrepreneurship, and so forth. Modern understanding of our biological reality and our cause-and-effect relationship dictates a need for principles worthy of time. On the outskirts of Dhaka there are about 1,000 brick factories. 90% of them are considered illegal by the Bangladesh government because the stacks are too low and also for the use of coal as a fuel. The toxic fumes they emit are the cause of 40% of the pollution in the city of Dhaka. Next to each factory there are the villages of workers. Whole families are forced to work for 15 hours a day without any right and with a salary that allows them only to survive miserably.

An uncontrolled urbanization as a result of speculation, rapid population growth and a continuous influx of migrants from nearby war areas has seen the city of Amman, the capital of Jordan, expand in the last fifteen years by 65%, with the 50% of the agricultural land in the area reconverted into urban areas. Something very similar happened in other Jordanian cities such as Zarqa and Irbid.A development without rules that has led Amman to become the most expensive city in the Middle East, more than Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha. An unsustainable development for cities where entire neighborhoods receive water only once a week and for a country that is one of the poorest in the world of resources. Jordan, in fact, is the second country worldwide with fewer water reserves and according to the UN, with no changes in the development system the country would run out of water by 2025.“Bye Bye Land” is a visual survey of a country and a territory invested by a rapid change. A change that is taking away the few resources available to the population, leaving behind cement, inadequate infrastructures and almost deserted neighborhoods.

Hayati, “my life” in Arabic, is a visual diary created entirely on a smartphone, which reflects on the photographer’s identity as a which reflects on the photographer’s dual identity as an Italian and a second generation immigrant. As the son of Moroccan immigrants, Karim El Maktafi’s life exists between two seemingly incompatible realities. Embracing a single status is not easy; feeling like an odd cultural hybrid happens often. Yet, while trying to define this identity, one understands the advantage of “standing on a doorstep”. One can decide who to be or where to belong, or else create new ties, keeping everything learnt along the path: more languages, more cultural taboos and references, more prohibitions to withstand and explain. Hayati explores some of these realities, using the photographer’s own life, family and friends as a case study. The images have been realized between Italy and Morocco in 2016.

From the ongoing series: LIMINAL (2016 – ongoing)
LIMINAL is the illusory threshold, the non-physical space between something that was and something that will be.
LIMINAL is Scandebergs’ personal exploration of the ideas of “possibility” and “fiction” related to certain places, especially the ones where multiple narratives have taken shape. By initiating dialogues between these loci and the intentional control on the perception cast over them, Scandebergs highlight the threshold between the “real and fictional” aspects of these places.

The body of women has always had a strong attraction for me, be it real, imagined or represented by artists, starting from the classics of painting up to the nude in photography. My work on female nude is completely made using natural light and is born from the fusion of these ‘real and imagined’ definitions in the hope of being able to celebrate their beauty. The women I photograph (some I have photographed for several years) are real women, in the sense that they are not professional models and all, apart from a few exceptions, know my work well. Women who pose with shared conviction, sometimes suggesting poses, always actively involved with the balance and tensions returned by the images. In some cases I had the feeling of being a camera operator rather than the creator of the scene or the author of the photo, to the point of wondering if I was the one who established the content of that image. The first part of this work begins in 1989 and ends in 2018, the year I left the Turin studio, where I took almost all the photographs in the brightest room. The second part is in the making.

We live in a delicate time when our relationship with natural world is complicated with a series of almost familiar memories coupled with the tragic fate that hangs in the balance because of the way we treat this world. If we look back , we can get trapped in a nostalgic place , where life seemed simpler and nature pristine and endless. if we look ahead , we see the natural world closing in on itself, being damaged by us, precisely those who enjoy its former glory. Terra is a series of photographs around Emilia-Romagna that represent the search for the incessant need to reflect on our relationship with nature , reliving feelings and emotions though our personal archive of memories. Images of landscapes, forest and trees are suspended in a dreamlike state between nostalgia and an in-depth search of abandoned or somewhat forgotten places that have come to resemble distant memories. Memories that trigger a deep reflection in his spectator clarifying and raising awareness of the present in which we live. Our relationship with the land and the environment around us are extremely sensitive issues today; at the time when we have have moved away from the primitive essence of nature, this series aims to emphasise the urgent and necessary reflection of who we are and what we have become, through a careful and mindful look at the landscapes around us.

Riviera, In my images, I follow the interaction between human and his urban context, I’m attracted by the dimension of the space in relation to the subject and his stage. Also, by the iconography of places from its signs. I like the idea of holding and abstracting by posing the reality around. Some of the images presented here are part of a larger project that collects more points of view, and locations devoted to the Italian Riviera, this ongoing work started in 2018 after a trip in Liguria capturing the Mediterranean aesthetic of the iconic bygone Italian summer.

“Focus” is an open research that relates pairs of photographs to each other.

A combined dialogue which invites the observer to think about the essence of the elements photographed. Focus is a personal visual journey aimed at creating perceptions between two totally detached situations. A process developed to redefine the identity of two elements through the eyes of the observer. Individual visual identities change when placed in relation to a second image.

Focus will continue to evolve for now only on OEG.
