The Roman Garden is part of Finisterrae, a multi-chaptered project about Southern European identity and the state of crisis that it is in.
This chapter aims to be an aesthetic reflection on contemporary Italy through the lines of ancient Roman world as represented in art. The work takes to extremes its visual elements and creates metaphorically a limitless garden. The characters are lost in a fictional and misleading atmosphere, where the temporal and the spatial dimension are deconstructed in order to rise a sense of disorientation. The world is out of joint.

    IMAGES FROM KAZAKHSTAN

    Kazakhstan (2014)

These photographs were taken in Kazakhstan on April 2014, upon an invitation by the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan to work on a collective documentary project in the South, covering the Kazak part of the ancient Silk Road.

During my stay, I took pictures of people and places, without any intention to follow a specific story, just focusing on the visible contrasts of modern Kazakhstan.

The images from the series “VTE” are part of a work shot in the Genova Voltri port in 2012 to document the docking of the Chinese semi-submersible ship “Zhen Hua”, transporting two huge new cranes for the terminal. I spent some days photographing the complex unloading and assembling operations, carried on by the Chinese crew. These cranes will be used to disembark containers, most of which filled with Chinese goods. I was totally caught by the symbolic meaning of what I was observing: a physical representation of the Chinese economic conquer. But I was also impressed by the peculiar atmosphere among the workers and aboard the ship: a distant, different working mood, that projected me for some hours in the deep hearth of the Chinese heavy industry.

“If you go to Danakil seeking adventures, you will not be able to go beyond your own shallowness. Which will appear unbearable even to you. The white-hot sun, the indifference of the Afars, the monotony of a desert devoid of colors will make you feel naked and helpless. And your balance, both mental and physical, will be in danger of going into pieces. You have to be able to defend yourself in the Danakil. You have to show, especially to yourself, to have a soul of a poet. The ones who venture to go to the Danakil do it to change their point of view.” From the book “Dancalia, camminando sul fondo di un mare scomparso” by Andrea Semplici, Ed. Terre di Mezzo. Endless stretches of salt, lakes with psychedelic colors and active volcanoes: this land, which is constantly changing, is heaven and hell together – an ancestral place where you can still watch the phenomena that gave rise to the world. Located in the northern part of the Afar’s Triangle, which takes its name from the nomadic people who live there, the vast Danakil depression is the place where the constantly expanding of three tectonic plates join together, close to the border area among Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti. This land made of re, salt and lava close to the Rift Valley – the long breach that bisects the continent – is a ghost ocean. It is from the retreat of the sea, evaporated twenty- thousand years ago, that the Danakil has gained its peculiarity: to be a spread of evaporitic rocks that gives rise to the Great Plain of Salt – a desert which stretches for about 600 kilometers. This is one of the most vulnerable places of our world: the re is just below our feet, ve kilometers away. There is a crust that is subjected to stresses of all kinds, a part of the planet where you feel the throbbing heart of the Earth. In this vast plain, the Afars’ huts built with mud and twigs appear like a mirage. These nomads, who are mainly devoted to the extraction of minerals, live in one of the most inhospitable places on earth, the hottest inhabited place in the world, with very little vegetation and temperatures that can reach 120°F degrees. The Afar people seem to have appeared from nowhere. They have kept a strong identity without having a testimony to their story. Their economy was, and is, precarious. They are nomads struggling with the hostility of the climate. They have adapted to survive in a harsh and impossible land.

The body of women has always had a strong attraction for me, be it real, imagined or represented by artists, starting from the classics of painting up to the nude in photography. My work on female nude is completely made using natural light and is born from the fusion of these ‘real and imagined’ definitions in the hope of being able to celebrate their beauty. The women I photograph (some I have photographed for several years) are real women, in the sense that they are not professional models and all, apart from a few exceptions, know my work well. Women who pose with shared conviction, sometimes suggesting poses, always actively involved with the balance and tensions returned by the images. In some cases I had the feeling of being a camera operator rather than the creator of the scene or the author of the photo, to the point of wondering if I was the one who established the content of that image. The first part of this work begins in 1989 and ends in 2018, the year I left the Turin studio, where I took almost all the photographs in the brightest room. The second part is in the making.

The Rites of Spring are a post-hardcore band from the eighties I have been constantly listening to since I was a teen myself–came to my mind and ended up in the title line. The name of the band, in turn, comes from Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a ballet and orchestral concert that work staging the ancient russian propitiatoty sacrifice of a maiden, forced to dance till death on the altar spring. Just like the maiden’s dance, my series has something hectic about it; its rhythm is cha- racterized by an almost physical gap betwe- en fiction and truth, the story is that of being identified with that teenager and my dance is made of images that swirl and scan my life, I find in them that sort of individual freedom that generate in me different moods and sometimes completely opposite, from a state of exaltation to an abyssal sadness, sometimes harsh and aggressive. There is no real beginning or end here, it is constantly evolving and we have always traveled together in parallel, as if it was my shadow.

After a one hour and three quarters journey from Manchester.I arrived at Blackpool.I remember it was a Friday evening at the end of June.

In the bus there was me and a dozen of lively old men who, like me, wanted to spend the weekend in this seaside town.As soon as I got off the bus, I found myself immersed in a landscape that instantly conquered me.

Blackpool has a set of different styles. It feels like being in the Los Angeles studios.
I can’t say if this place is good or bad.
Seeing a reproduction of the 158-meter-high Eiffel tower that flies over the town, struck me almost as much as the original one for sure. Who knows why they built it in the Queen’s Kingdom, knowing their rivalry with France.

However, even the waterfront was not far behind.
it was like being in a decadent Las Vegas with game arcades of all kinds.
The noises of the slot machines and the dazzling colors of the casino lights invited you to look in the opposite direction, where you could admire the perfectly restored Victorian-style piers, more than 500 meters long, which reached out to the Irish sea, as if searching to find  some peace.
The people I met were all incredibly interesting and photogenic too.
Blackpool is a place beyond everything I ever knew  and for this very reason
I spent 8 days photographing, instead of two.

I was whole and did not understand comes from the need to shape and to try to define parenthood experience. My wife Chiara was adopted and she was only seven days old when she arrived at her parent’s home. She never saw or knew anything about her biological parents. Motherhood for her was like closing a circle. When Zeno came in our lives then, in that moment when we found ourselves somehow “split”; Chiara felt herself, for the very first time, truly “whole”.

    Makanà.

The original name of Macugnaga (Piemonte, Italy), a land originating from centuries of a population of Germanic origin that inhabits the Alpine regions around Monte Rosa. They call their speech “Titsch”. They belong to the root of the Alemanni.

They are mountain experts, accustomed to harsh climates, the Walsers found in the Pennine, Lepontine and Graie Alps (which include some of the greatest peaks and highest passes of the entire chain) an ideal environment to settle. And it is in these mountainous areas, still uncontaminated today, characterized by small villages, high altitude pastures, woods and unproductive rocky environments, that this ancient language is still spoken by the few people who form the Walser community of the Ossola, Formazza valleys, Sesia and Anzasca. The colonization of the Walser in this territory was peaceful, given the climatically and geographically impervious and inhospitable nature of the occupied territories. They did not take away anybody’s land: instead they went to civilize environments never inhabited by man. The effects of globalization have been seen for some time in these places. There are still a few Walsers who continue to speak their native language. Their customs and traditions are celebrated every year.

The Piemontese Walser community is divided into twelve municipalities all located in the provinces of Vercelli and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and maintains strong ties with the Walser communities residing in (German-speaking) Switzerland.

Novytarial village. Mari-el Republic. The ritual of the swing. Women, one day of the year, that coincides with the beginning of spring, get the swing to let their negative feelings fade away.

There is a population with Finnish ancestry living in a rural area near Joshkar-ola, in the Republic of Mari El, Russia: Mari people.

The Mari are the last pagan population of the West. About 600,000 people in houndreds of small villages who live in a symbiotic relationship with nature, which is celebrated as the basis of their existence. Nature is our temple, they say.

    The Poetry of Home
    Milano, Italia, 2020

The aggressive Russian stances towards the Baltic States and the military activity within the bordering Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, has recently prompted the Lithuanian army to resume military conscription.
The ultimate goal is building an operational self-defence force if a Russian aggression becomes reality.
Lithuania will recruit and train military personnel for the next five years starting in September 2015, enlisting 3,000 people, aged 19 to 27. The great majority of them -about 2,600 recruits- have joined voluntarily.

Centolire is an ongoing personal project I started the day I moved to New York.

I decided on a whim to leave Milan and my entire life, and I was very anxious about the venture. As a photographer, I faced my distress by taking pictures

Centolire grew beyond the need to embrace a difficult situation, and instead became my visual diary

The title comes from a traditional Italian migrant song

“…mamma dammi cento lire che in America voglio andar….”

“mum, give me a hundred liras as I want to move to America”

This particular set is a series-in-the-series, named “Santi e Madonne in Alphabet City”, which is a small homage to all the statues of Saints tht can be found in the public and private gardens in Alphabet City, in New York

Note: All Centolire’s pictures are taken with phone cameras

The project was born in May 2018, when the author decided to tell the story of Francesco, a twenty-six-year-old Italian queer from Sesto Fiorentino, a small town just outside Florence, where he still lives. What emerges from the narrative is the path Francesco faced in living his identity as an expression of normality, in a society that is not yet ready to accept all of the different facets of a human being. The boy’s life is characterized by the symbiotic relationship with his sister Eleonora, who together with him undertook a path of physical, emotional and creative transformation: both of them underwent surgery to fight obesity; Eleonora supports her brother in the daily affirmation of her identity and together they have formed a band, “Glitter Diamonds”. The first piece performed by the duo is titled “DIVA”.Photography represents the trait d’union that allows the viewer to focus on the experience and the metamorphosis of the protagonist. The experience of Francesco, thanks to the comparison with his family and with the author, becomes a means to convey the courage to show oneself as one is.An account of a personal experience opens up to the broader themes of acceptance of diversity and the recognition of the right to be oneself.

Portrait of Andrea Parodi, Cagliari 2006

DEAD OR ALIVE, real or represented in the form of statues or soft toys, animals are always sources of enchantment for the human beings. Each child feels a primal attraction towards those other living beings that populate the earth. They are conceived as toys, tools for work, companionship and nutrition. Man continues to love them, enslave them, eat them, imprison them, deify them. They are the protagonists of almost every comic and game, they are exalted and just as massacred. I continue to be somehow attracted to every animal, whether it is alive or dead, wild or made out of plastic, free or defeated. If it were in my power, I would close the large aquariums tomorrow but I must admit that I love to stay there for hours. Few things scream justice like zoos, yet the ability to see animals up close remains a call I pretend not to hear. Although diving and watching underwater is my favorite activity, I still enjoy visiting the fish markets. I don’t do it anymore but I really like fishing. I can’t pretend that I didn’t feel a dominant emotion the only time in life I hunted an animal with a weapon. I am convinced that no physically healthy human being has any reason to continue being a carnivore, yet, I seldom continue to eat meat and fish. This series of photos was born from the paradox born by the incongruent coexistence between these feelings.

A skateboarding trip along Italy in times of social distancing. Skateboarding is often associated to big cities, whose streets offer smooth surfaces, rails, marble ledges. This summer together with a group of the best italian skateboarders we toured Italy, looking for the most hidden, rough and difficult skate spots I’ve ever seen.

This work comes from the visual analysis of a collection of votive tablets found in the surroundings of Soliera (MO), a rural town in Emilia Romagna. Ex Voto panels are devotional paintings created by Catholic worshippers to pay tribute to the Virgin Mary for having saved them from various kinds of occurrences.

This series is about the remains of a darkling time, about fading elements of a life based on hard work and harmless devotion when humans were nothing more than servants at the mercy of Nature’s grandeur.

    Atlante Umano Siciliano:

Sicilian. Human. Atlas: Three words that together form a sentence, where each of them has a precise identity. Sicily, a door to enter Europe, to some offering the start of a new life, a point of arrival from neighbouring Africa. For others, the natives, it is a glimpse of the world, its roots running deep. A wonderful land, yet it can be one of the worst. Here nothing is ever as it appears. For contingency, Greek illusion. A work of contrasts: life/death, chaos/silence, resignation/ redemption, joy/sadness. Semi-abandoned towns where those who leave do not return and middle age is a utopia. The elderly remain, as do the stones of the houses, with doors and windows barred shut and decorated with “For sale” signs. The stones tell of what was and what will be in the near future. We flee Sicily, a land that is dying, and not even slowly. It must be saved in order to not forget, to reproduce on paper what is still there. The paradox is that there is no lack of energy or poetry. In the eternal struggle between leaving and staying, I have chosen to try to stand strong and recount the land I live in, unlike exotic photography that draws us to other places, far away. And yet, opening the doors of the house, opening the metaphorical windows of our lives, that world welcomes us and asks to be described. Life, death, dreams, defeats. Atlas is a journey. No matter how, just where and why. Walking through the geography of the Mediterranean soul, made of sensations, of perceptions that flow from the bare earth after the harvest. Wind, sky, sea currents, sun, moon and salt on the skin. Everything contributes to tracing the signs of the wayfarer’s travels on an imaginary map, who carries nothing but his bones, naked and open to confront surprise, fate, destiny. Human because earthly. Because after all humanity is the focus of the study. His condition of being “modern” in a land that is struggling to evolve and that, when it does, or tries to, gives up a piece of its atavistic identity each time. Sicilian, therefore, means not always being proud. Today, being Sicilian means to set out, to dig deep into the earth knowing that the sea, the only definitive border, has its only limit in the horizon and in the directions of the winds. Three words to describe a borderland. I set off on a journey in search of a small America inspired by Robert Frank and his The Americans. This is the meaning of this work that begged to come out.

Cines de Cuba is both a nostalgic survey of the charmingly decadent buildings of the Cuban island, and a reflection on the evolution of our use of the media.

Carolina Sandretto was in San Miguel de los Banos, under a blazing sun, when she saw an abandoned little cinema and two women and a child walking towards it. After she made that first photograph and researched the cinemas, she embarked in a four-year voyage to photograph all the ones she could find.

While photographing this project which became a 350 pages book, Carolina realized how the cinemas, that used to be the center of our social life, are now marginalized by a more personal yet lonely use of entertainment.

Cines de Cuba, takes us on a road less known, between crumbling facades and broken screens, and unveils the place in our hearths where the fascinating world of the Cinema lies.

During quarantine last spring I wasn’t allowed to move more than 200m from my home in Milan. Randomly roaming in such a confined perimeter I witnessed the blooming of nature in such a suddenly deserted cityscape. It was at the same time strenuous, melancholic and glorious, somehow paralleling our confinement. The title, Terrarium, echoes those sealed glass containers containing soil and living plants: I felt as I was trapped into one, and as I was observing it from the outside at the same time.

MY NAME IS FILDA ADOCH is a project on resilience in post-conflict Northern Uganda. Every day Filda and I would sit down together and she would comment all the images. “My name is Filda Adoch” is the story of Filda in her own words.

Caption Filda I: “Here I did not have an axe nor a panga with me to cut the wood so I decided to break it wit my head. My back portrays a lot of strenght and it reminds me that even though I am hungry i can still take care of my family”

Caption Filda II : “This is my brother Odong sitting by the house at night under a sky full of stars. Stars are important because they tell us the time. Take “Latwok”, which is a very big star : we can follow it moving through the sky from the evening to the morning. The stars also helped us so many times when we were running from the rebels: they gave us light. Also, when children would cry and risked to make us heard by the rebels, we would tell them that the stars would fall on their heads and they would look up and  be so scared that they would stop crying.”

PIANISSIMO, from the title of a collection of poems of Ligurian poet Camillo Sbarbaro, is the result of a collaboration with dancer and choreographer Virgilio Sieni during an artistic residency in Siena in 2009.

An uncontrolled urbanization as a result of speculation, rapid population growth and a continuous influx of migrants from nearby war areas has seen the city of Amman, the capital of Jordan, expand in the last fifteen years by 65%, with the 50% of the agricultural land in the area reconverted into urban areas. Something very similar happened in other Jordanian cities such as Zarqa and Irbid.A development without rules that has led Amman to become the most expensive city in the Middle East, more than Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha. An unsustainable development for cities where entire neighborhoods receive water only once a week and for a country that is one of the poorest in the world of resources. Jordan, in fact, is the second country worldwide with fewer water reserves and according to the UN, with no changes in the development system the country would run out of water by 2025.“Bye Bye Land” is a visual survey of a country and a territory invested by a rapid change. A change that is taking away the few resources available to the population, leaving behind cement, inadequate infrastructures and almost deserted neighborhoods.

    2’ Due minuti

E’ strano come ogni cosa sembri veloce.

    /

    2’ (due minuti)

It’s curious to see how fast everything seems to run. It is not just about a thought or a feeling, oftentimes all that we experience emotionally and professionally slips away in quick, almost unrealistic moments. The sense of time with photography is different than in real life, and usually we hear about the famous instant of reality framed as the decisive moment. I have always trusted photography to be a magnificent medium to represent what is not visible, and I still believe so, hence my choice to capture images in a single color, easy to understand all the same not predictable. I favour simple and familiar objects of daily use, yet never manifest, that I photograph with a long exposure and a small aperture to engrave it on the memory: the image is recorded through an extended time that begins with the gaze and returns to it after an imaginary journey across the portrayed reality. Combined with a precise amount of light, as if a music track, each image is marked by seconds or hundredths of seconds, sometimes whole minutes. In dim light there is often a surprising amount of light…it only takes 2 minutes
