Taking a picture of a landscape is an almost spiritual act. We are suddenly bewitched. Something made us stop and take the time to contemplate, observe and photograph. While
making this series, the words of Caspar David Friedrich made sense to me: “The painter should paint not only what he has in front of him, but also what he sees inside himself. If he sees nothing within, then he should stop painting what is in front of him. ” Paysages was also a way for me to portray a certain Morocco. Through landscapes, I seek once again to unpack stereotypes. We are far from the dunes and camels. We are here, in a new, different setting. One that is also a part of this country, with all its contrasts and diversity.

The original name of Macugnaga (Piemonte, Italy), a land originating from centuries of a population of Germanic origin that inhabits the Alpine regions around Monte Rosa. They call their speech “Titsch”. They belong to the root of the Alemanni.

They are mountain experts, accustomed to harsh climates, the Walsers found in the Pennine, Lepontine and Graie Alps (which include some of the greatest peaks and highest passes of the entire chain) an ideal environment to settle. And it is in these mountainous areas, still uncontaminated today, characterized by small villages, high altitude pastures, woods and unproductive rocky environments, that this ancient language is still spoken by the few people who form the Walser community of the Ossola, Formazza valleys, Sesia and Anzasca. The colonization of the Walser in this territory was peaceful, given the climatically and geographically impervious and inhospitable nature of the occupied territories. They did not take away anybody’s land: instead they went to civilize environments never inhabited by man. The effects of globalization have been seen for some time in these places. There are still a few Walsers who continue to speak their native language. Their customs and traditions are celebrated every year.

The Piemontese Walser community is divided into twelve municipalities all located in the provinces of Vercelli and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and maintains strong ties with the Walser communities residing in (German-speaking) Switzerland.

On Dec. 7th 2019, La parata strampalata! invaded the empty halls of Triennale di Milano and its neighborhood with an irreverent parade, animated by giant handmade puppets and live music.

The event, curated by Fantom’s Ilaria Speri, was the result of five days of free workshops for all ages, conceived and held by Ruggge, Drinchendrò and BOLO Paper for Parla Ascolta Guarda Fai.

Everything was made with recovered materials, discarded cardboard boxes and fabric scraps, and each creation was installed and exhibited in the Curva hall of Triennale during the week, up to the final parade, from the museum to the near Arco della Pace and Parco Sempione, and back.

During quarantine last spring I wasn’t allowed to move more than 200m from my home in Milan. Randomly roaming in such a confined perimeter I witnessed the blooming of nature in such a suddenly deserted cityscape. It was at the same time strenuous, melancholic and glorious, somehow paralleling our confinement. The title, Terrarium, echoes those sealed glass containers containing soil and living plants: I felt as I was trapped into one, and as I was observing it from the outside at the same time.
