Alba Zari

Alba Zari since childhood she led a nomadic life that brought her to live in different cities and countries. She was born in Thailand and lived there until the age of eight. In Italy she lived first in Trieste then in Bologna, where she graduate from the DAMS with a degree in film. She went on to study documentary photography at the International center of photography in New York, and then continued her studies in photography and visual design at the NABA in Milan. Her experience as a traveler influences and is reflected in her photographic practice, with intends to explore social themes, for example her visual studies of mental health centres since the Italian Basaglia Law and of the widespread eating disorders of the American society. She has also completed projects on scenes from daily life din urban landscapes. She regularly collaborates with fashion brands and newspapers. Her style is distingue by her very painterly use of the color of the material, and by her images featuring unresolved, melancholic environments. Zari has an introspective sensibility for photography. Through the lens, she depicts posing female figures who, despite the classicism of the compositions, emerge in all their expressive power with aching intimacy. Her recent works include Places (2015), a book and a photographic project executed with ElementWo, witch deals with analysis of the visual communication of ISIS propaganda; Radici (2013), a documentary project on the vegetation of the Mesr desert in Iran; The Y- Research of Biological Father (2017), born out of a journey in search of her origins through the father she never knew. The result of her images are variable with always different colours and a materiality feel. She often employs self-portraits. She was born in Bangkok in 1987 and now lives and works in London. Alba Zari fin da piccola conduce una vita nomade che la porta a vivere in città e nazioni differenti. Nasce in Thailandia dove vive fino all’età di 8 anni. In Italia abita prima a Trieste, poi a Bologna dove si laurea al DAMS in cinematografia per poi specializzarsi in fotografia e visual design alla NABA di Milano, proseguendo gli studi in fotografia documentaria all’International Center of Photography di New York. L’esperienza di viaggiatrice influenza e si riflette nella sua pratica fotografica, volta ad indagare temi di contenuto sociale, come le ricerche visive sui centri d’igiene mentale dopo la legge Basaglia, i disordini alimentari diffusi nella società americana, cui affianca progetti su scee di vita quotidiana nei paesaggi urbani. Collabora stabilmente con brand di moda e testate giornalistiche. Ha uno stile che si distingue per l’uso del colore materico, molto pittorico, per la creazione di immagini dalle atmosfere spese e malinconiche. Zari ha una sensibilità fotografica introspettiva. Con il suo obiettivo ritrae in posa figure femminili, che nonostante la classicità delle composizioni emergono in tutta la loro forza espressiva con struggente intimità. Tra i suoi lavori recenti: Places (2015) libro e progetto fotografico condotto con ElementWo, sull’analisi della comunicazione visiva della propaganda dell’ISIS; Radici (2013), un progetto documentaristico sulla vegetazione del deserto del Mesr in Iran, The Y – Research of biological father (2017), nato da un viaggio alla ricerca delle sue origini del padre mai conosciuto. Il risultato delle sue immagini contengono incognite di colore sempre diverse e materiche. Ricorre spesso all’autoritratto. Nasce nel 1987 vive a lavora a Londra.
