Mario Zanaria

I started taking pictures when I was twelve, and from the beginning I have always turned my lens toward people. I decided to make photography my profession, steering from a path that had led me elsewhere, and never looked back. I began working in Milano, then moved to New York to specialize in fashion photography in a more international environment. Today I split my time between these two cities, focusing on fashion and portraiture and working for international clients and magazines.

Centolire is an ongoing personal project I started the day I moved to New York.

I decided on a whim to leave Milan and my entire life, and I was very anxious about the venture. As a photographer, I faced my distress by taking pictures

Centolire grew beyond the need to embrace a difficult situation, and instead became my visual diary

The title comes from a traditional Italian migrant song

“…mamma dammi cento lire che in America voglio andar….”

“mum, give me a hundred liras as I want to move to America”

This particular set is a series-in-the-series, named “Santi e Madonne in Alphabet City”, which is a small homage to all the statues of Saints tht can be found in the public and private gardens in Alphabet City, in New York

Note: All Centolire’s pictures are taken with phone cameras
