60x60cm - 350€Hayati, “my life” in Arabic, is a visual diary created entirely on a smartphone, which reflects on the photographer’s identity as a which reflects on the photographer’s dual identity as an Italian and a second generation immigrant. As the son of Moroccan immigrants, Karim El Maktafi’s life exists between two seemingly incompatible realities. Embracing a single status is not easy; feeling like an odd cultural hybrid happens often. Yet, while trying to define this identity, one understands the advantage of “standing on a doorstep”. One can decide who to be or where to belong, or else create new ties, keeping everything learnt along the path: more languages, more cultural taboos and references, more prohibitions to withstand and explain. Hayati explores some of these realities, using the photographer’s own life, family and friends as a case study. The images have been realized between Italy and Morocco in 2016.

60x60cm - 350€An uncontrolled urbanization as a result of speculation, rapid population growth and a continuous influx of migrants from nearby war areas has seen the city of Amman, the capital of Jordan, expand in the last fifteen years by 65%, with the 50% of the agricultural land in the area reconverted into urban areas. Something very similar happened in other Jordanian cities such as Zarqa and Irbid.A development without rules that has led Amman to become the most expensive city in the Middle East, more than Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha. An unsustainable development for cities where entire neighborhoods receive water only once a week and for a country that is one of the poorest in the world of resources. Jordan, in fact, is the second country worldwide with fewer water reserves and according to the UN, with no changes in the development system the country would run out of water by 2025.“Bye Bye Land” is a visual survey of a country and a territory invested by a rapid change. A change that is taking away the few resources available to the population, leaving behind cement, inadequate infrastructures and almost deserted neighborhoods.

120€Rabbit Island is a 91-acre forested island in Lake Superior three miles east of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula (USA). The majority of the island is held under a conservation easement granted by the Keweenaw Land Trust, assuring its unique ecosystem and will serve as a platform for science, art, preservation, and recreation for the generations. Rabbit Island is an Art Residency for artists where I spent one month in June 2018 considering the island my sketchbook, drawing with lights, colors, waves, stone marks, clouds, fog, and everything I could not control. Photos of my research I don’t draw related to several land art and fictional actions are available exclusively on OEG to support my work with Rabbit Island and other charity projects. The residency reflects on the American continent’s four hundred year history of settlement and division of land. It stems from the idea that in a developed society, the intelligent organization of wild spaces is one of the most civilized things we can pursue. The island itself, an unsettled and undivided area, enables artists to present commentary on these ideas, creating interpretations and solutions to issues of the global importance of climate change, loss of natural habitat, the value of pristine watersheds, the environmental implications of entrepreneurship, and so forth. Modern understanding of our biological reality and our cause-and-effect relationship dictates a need for principles worthy of time.

60x60cm - 350€The body of women has always had a strong attraction for me, be it real, imagined or represented by artists, starting from the classics of painting up to the nude in photography. My work on female nude is completely made using natural light and is born from the fusion of these ‘real and imagined’ definitions in the hope of being able to celebrate their beauty. The women I photograph (some I have photographed for several years) are real women, in the sense that they are not professional models and all, apart from a few exceptions, know my work well. Women who pose with shared conviction, sometimes suggesting poses, always actively involved with the balance and tensions returned by the images. In some cases I had the feeling of being a camera operator rather than the creator of the scene or the author of the photo, to the point of wondering if I was the one who established the content of that image. The first part of this work begins in 1989 and ends in 2018, the year I left the Turin studio, where I took almost all the photographs in the brightest room. The second part is in the making.
